Photographs

Elizabeth Fenwick, a Library Operations Associate in the Cataloging Department of the University Libraries at NIU created a place for photo sharing on Flickr.com where photographers could post their photos in one place.

Elizabeth took pictures of employees evacuating the area along Normal Road next to Founders Memorial Library shortly after the shooting and here is one of them:

She also spotted a creative use of snow to spell out NIU:

Tom Winkle, who uses the nickname BilgeRat on Flickr, posted several pictures. This picture, entitled "The Memorial" shows six crosses, five with the names of the victims and the shooter’s sixth cross on the reverse side on the hill in the Martin Luther King Commons. Tom posted this image on February 16th:

Thorne Washington, with the Flickr nickname Tamar787, posted several photographs. "We Are Here" shows people bringing flowers to the memorial in the Martin Luther King Commons:

A prayer lies in the snow. The text reads, "Remember the Love, Beauty, and Lives of those in this Tragedy who were Lost! May their memories be a constant reminder of the Love all around us! God give us strength!"

Anemone402, or Nancy Walsh, captured a photograph of a memorial area that appeared on the corner of Lucinda and Normal Road, next to the Holmes Student Center:

Sycamore High School’s flag at half mast:

Someone taped a poem to the glass at Cole Hall. The lyrics are from the song "Overcome" by the band Live. The song dates to before 9/11 but it became associated with the events on that day:

Overcome by Live

"Even now the world is bleeding
but feeling just fine numb in our castle
Where we're always free to choose
never free enough to find
I wish something would break cause
we're running out of time.
And I am overcome. Holy water in my lungs.
I am overcome
These women in the streets pulling out their hair
My master's in the yard giving light to
the unaware this plastic little place is just a
step amongst the stairs.
And I am overcome. Holy water in my lungs.
I am overcome
So drive me out to that open field, turn the
ignition off and spin around. Your help is
here but I'm parked in this open space blocking
the gates of love
I am overcome. Holy water in my lungs. I am
overcome.
This beautiful drowning this holy water
is in my lungs."

The photo "Crosses at Northern Illinois University" shows six crosses at the Lutheran Campus Ministry for the NIU shooting and thirty-three crosses for those who died in the Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007. The crosses appeared draped in red in black shortly after the shooting. On Easter Sunday, white replaced the red and black. On the first anniversary of the Virginia Tech tragedy, the Luthern Campus Ministry then added the thirty-three smaller crosses:
