A Brief Word About This Site:

Following the shooting on February 14, 2008 resulting in the deaths of Gayle Dubowski, Catalina Garcia, Julianna Gehant, Ryanne Mace, and Daniel Parmenter; eighteen students injured; and the suicide of the gunman, Steven Kazmierczak, hundreds of thousands of people helped each other through sharing condolences, music, pictures, signs, teddy bears, and Huskie dogs; creating ribbons, sending each other messages, and anything else that helped them cope with the tragedy. Students, staff, faculty, alumni, local community members, a multitude of people at other universities, relatives and friends of the victims, loving and caring people from all over the world, emergency workers, and our colleagues at Virginia Tech participated in activities to help the healing process in some way. Immediately after the shooting, staff and students at the Regional History Center began collecting documents, objects, and pictures often with the assistance of generous donors which preserved how people shared support. This Web site will show just a tiny fraction of the support which took place in the hours, days, weeks, and months following the shooting. The Huskie spirit shows in the creativity of the pictures, music, signs, ribbons, and everything else which helped bond the NIU community together.

The image to the right is a car magnet, created in the shape of a memory ribbon. Items such as this began appearing after the shooting as many people sought tangible reminders of the tragedy, and to show their support.
