Orville J. Victor. The Life of Joseph Garibaldi, the Liberator of
Italy. December 20, 1860.
Found in: Dime Biographical Library, no. 1; Beadle's American Sixpenny Biographies (London), no. 1.
† This booklet was also issued with black cloth covers, blind stamped in a dice pattern with corner ornaments, and lettered "Beadle's Biographical Library, No. 1, Garibaldi." The lining paper of the board covers and one flyleaf, front and back, are of bright yellow paper. That on the inside of the front cover carries a blurb, printed in red ink, about the Beadle Dime Handbooks. The front flyleaf, also printed in red, announces the Biographical Library. At the back, both flyleaf and inside cover are blank. There is a frontispiece showing Garibaldi on horseback. The title page gives the 141 William Street address, but there is nothing to show whether or not this is a first edition. The copyright notice on the verso of the title page is dated 1860. A copy in the New York Public Library lacks the board covers.
The original cover was Type I. Later, Type II cover (Fig.
95) was used, and still later reprints were enclosed in Type III wrappers.
The illustration on the wrapper of the late reprints is of Garibaldi on
horseback. Originals came from 141 William Street, as did also Type II,
but Type III was issued from 118.

Edward Willett. The Life of Ulysses Sydney Grant, Lieutenant-General,
U.S.A. Copyrighted 1865.
Found in: Dime Biographical Library, no. 15; Lives of Great
Americans, no. 13.
An odd picture of Grant with a long beard (Fig.
96), and very similar to one appearing in Harper's Weekly about
the same time, is given on the wrapper. This portrait has been said to
be one of Stonewall Jackson dressed by the engraver in a Union uniform,
but more probably it is a picture produced for the publishers by the imagination
of the artist. Until Brady took Grant's photograph, March 9, 1864, there
† were few portraits of him, and his features were entirely unknown in New
York, Washington, and the East. The photograph did not have a wide distribution
at first, and since a mole appears in the picture on the right side of
Grant's face, it is probable that the drawing was made from a verbal description
by someone who had met him. The original wrapper was Type III and had
the 98 William Street address.
Another edition of the booklet, with a cream-colored cover and a type-set
title in diagonal lines sloping downward to the right in the place of
the usual cover of orange (Fig. 100), was deposited
for copyright in 1870. Type VII.
A third edition, marked "Memorial Edition," has on the cover
the usual portrait of Grant with a short beard (Fig.
101). Type VIII. A memorial page has been added, otherwise the booklet
is the same as the older editions. It was copyrighted in 1885. † The middle name 'Sydney' was not corrected to 'Simpson' even in the later Lives of Great Americans.
The firm's name appears among the Biographical Libraries for the first
time as Beadle and Adams, 98 William Street, with No. 15 of the series.

† Correction made as per Volume 3.
