Beadle's American Sixpenny Biographies (London)

SEVEN NUMBERS of the Dime Biographical Library were reprinted by the London branch of Beadle & Co. John Paul Jones, called the "American Pirate" by the English, naturally was not included (1). In appearance these booklets were very similar to the American edition, with black lettering and cut on orange wrappers (Fig. 102).

† Notes

1 Denis R. Rogers has called my attention to a copy of "The Life and Exploits of John Paul Jones" (which unfortunately is without wrappers) which may be an English reprint, for there is no copyright notice on the back of the title page as there should be were it an American edition. But Mr. W. R. Johnson has copies of the Carson and the McClellan Biographies without copyright notices yet with the American wrappers (Type II, Fig. 95). The Jones biography, therefore, should at least temporarily be omitted from the English list, especially since it was apparently never advertised in England. There is, of course, the possibility that when Beadle sold the London branch to Routledge, he shipped some unsold copies to America and there enclosed them in American wrappers, but that seems far-fetched as an explanation of the missing copyright notices.
† Correction made as per Volume 3.
