Men of the Time
DURING the latter part of 1862, Beadle and Company issued three booklets
containing biographies of a number of Civil War leaders. They are approximately
6 ½ by 4 ¼ inches in size, and have the usual orange wrappers. There is
no illustration on the front wrapper, but a list of the biographies is surrounded
by an ornamental design containing the title of the series, Men of the Time,
the numerals "10" in the upper corners, and the letters "U"
and "S" in the lower (Fig. 103). Four or
five portraits were inserted in each book, which contains 100 pages printed
in a single column in good, clear type. The first number was published from
the 141 William Street address, and appeared September 19, 1862, but when No.
2 was issued, October 17, 1862, the firm had already removed to 118 William Street, and this is the address given on the succeeding two booklets.
