This story appeared previously, under the same title but with the author's pseudonym "Cousin May Carleton," as a serial in the New York Mercury, XXII, beginning in No. 1132, September 29, 1860. It was then issued in book form in 1861. Still later, Frederic A. Brady published it with twelve illustrations by F. 0. C. Darley, April 24, 1863.

Locale: Newport and an island off the New England coast.

Originally published as a serial in Reynold's Miscellany, XXX, beginning May 9, 1863, and simultaneously, under the title "Downe Reserve; or, The Mystery of the Wishing Well" as a serial in the New York Mercury, XXV, beginning in No. 1275, June 27, 1863. The same publishers issued it in book form, and later Frederic Brady issued it in August, 1864.

Locale: Surrey, England. "Wishe, ladye, before thatte ye drinke: Itt shalle be yours, the thynge thatte ye thinke."

Found in: Twenty-Five Cent Novels, no. 3; Saturday Journal/Star Journal (various title changes), no. 290; Cheap Editions of Popular Authors, no. 10.

In advertisements, the title was announced as "Erminie; or, The Gipsy Queen's Vow," and under that title it had previously been published as a serial in the New York Mercury, XXIV, beginning in No. 1203, February 8, 1862.

Locale: Near London. A woman, whose son is condemned to transportation, vows to devote her whole life to revenge upon the judge.
