Newport, R. I., Cohasset, Mass., and New York City. A man and his wife quarrel, and he is accidentally pushed off a cliff. Her "evil genius" sees this and advises her to conceal the "murder," and thereby he has a hold upon her for blackmail. The husband actually escaped, and all ends well.

Asbury on the Atlantic coast, Maine, and Brussels. After a week's acquaintance, Henry Clifford marries Judith Swain, five years his senior. On the honeymoon in Europe, Judith runs away with a seedy stranger and is reported dead in the wreck of an ocean steamer. Ten years later, when Clifford is about to marry Caroline Balfour, Judith turns up again, but refuses to tell where she has been. Clifford takes her to a lonely farm in Maine. Here he finds that she had been previously married but believed her husband dead until he turned up in Brussels. She commits suicide when her previous marriage is discovered, and Clifford marries Miss Balfour.

Buffalo, New York City, and Asbury. Time: Not long after the Civil War. Mary Taylor, a New York man's daughter by his first wife, is brought up by his brother in California. After the brother's death, Mary, dying of consumption, starts east, accompanied by her cousin, Philip, and a friend, Alice Maynard. Mary dies in Buffalo, and makes Philip and Alice swear that Alice will impersonate her, so that her father, who has not seen her since she was a child, will not mourn for her death. Alice turns out to be Mrs. Taylor's daughter by a previous husband.

Tilford, not far from New York City. The plot of a clever scoundrel who impersonates a friend of the family and threatens to reveal the bigamy of the girl's father unless she marries him. The bigamy turns out to be a concocted story, and all ends well.
