Jane Porter, daughter of William Porter, an army officer, and his wife Jane Blenkinsop, was born in Durham, England, in 1776. She was educated in Edinburgh, and later, with her mother, removed to London. Her first novel, "Thaddeus of Warsaw," was published in London in 1803. Besides numerous novels, she also wrote for various periodicals. She died at her brother's home in Bristol May 24, 1850.
