George Alfred Lawrence, English novelist, was born March 25, 1827, in Buxted, Sussex. He was educated at Rugby and Oxford, where he took his B.A. in 1850. In 1851 he was married to Mary Kirwan, and in 1852 was admitted to the bar. During the Civil War in America he wished to enlist in the Confederate Army, so came to the United States, but was captured and later released on request of the British Minister at Washington. He traveled much in later years and died in Edinburgh, September 23, 1876. "Sword and Gown" was published in London in 1868.
