In the Saturday Journal during the early 1870's there were many poems by Lettie Artley Irons, and in No. 284, August 21, 1875, appeared this notice: "We are pained to hear of the recent death of our quondam contributor, Lettie Artley Irons, whose essays . . . and the serial 'Mad Nathan' (which appeared under a nom deplume) were . . . She was an invalid and often wrote on a bed of pain and for the last few years of her life . . . was a terrible sufferer." No other information was given, and not even the place of her residence. †She was a sister of Archie C. Irons (q.v.).
The serial mentioned was actually entitled "Wild Nathan," written by "Paul J. Prescott," and began in 1870 in the first number of the Saturday Journal. In the same year she had another story in Starts American Novels, and a few years later the serial was reprinted in the same series. Both novels were several times reprinted by Beadle under various titles.
Under the name "Paul J. Prescott" the following novels appeared:
Saturday Journal. No. 1
Starr's American Novels. Nos. 51, 84
Pocket Novels. Nos. 41, 134
Dime Novels. No. 593
Boy's Library (octavo). Nos. 148, 220
Pocket Library. Nos. 462, 493
† Correction made as per Volume 3.
