"Les Travailleurs de la Mer" was published in Paris in 1866. Salvaging a wreck in the English Channel, off the Isle of Guernsey, with the hand of a maiden as a reward. A fight with a devil-fish. The girl marries an Episcopal priest and the wrecker stands in the sea to watch the boat that carries the girl away until the rising tide covers him.

New Orleans and vicinity in 1860. A Southern girl, brought up as white, finds that her mother had been a slave. She herself becomes a slave, runs away, and is married to an Englishman. They go to London to live.
