Dinah Maria Mulock was born in Staffordshire, England, April 20, 1826, and died at Shortlands, Bromley, October 12, 1887. She was married to George Lillie Craik, a man eleven years her junior, in 1864. She wrote some poems, but is best remembered for one of her novels, "John Halifax, Gentleman," which was written in 1856.
