"Captain Comstock" was probably a pseudonym, but of whom is unknown. William Comstock wrote many short sea tales for the Saturday Journal, and most of the stories written by his son, Augustus, were also of the sea. However, the latter did write some Westerns, but none corresponds to the three published by Beadle in 1869 under the name "Captain Comstock." One of these tales, however, also appeared as by "Charles Dudley Warren." This might be accepted as a real name except for the fact that it sounds too much like the name Charles Dudley Warner to be real. Temporarily, Captain Comstock's novels are listed under the name "Charles Dudley Warren," even though both names seem to be pseudonymous.
