Rhoda Broughton, English novelist of country life, was born in Denbigh, North Wales, November 29, 1840. After the death of her father, a clergyman, in 1863, she lived with her sister, Mrs. William Newcome, in North Wales and in Oxford, until 1892. She then, until her death, June 5, 1920, lived with a cousin at Headington. Her first novel, "Not Wisely but too Well," was published in 1867.
